This is a famous Angala Parameshwari   temple, where Goddess , She is seen as lying down in the form of a lady in a family way,She is also called  Poongavanathu amman. The God is called Thandava rayan

The main deity at the temple is known as Poongavanathu Amman. The goddess appears in the form of a natural anthill resembling a woman suffering from labour pain, lying with her mouth open. Owing to the presence of Shiva  inside the sanctum sanctorum, the idol of Nandi  is present in front of the sanctum instead of a lion found normally in a Devi temple, which is considered a rarity. There are shrines to Ganes, Nataraja and the philosopher-saint Valluvar near the sanctum sanctorum. Nataraja is known by the name Thandavarayan.[ The sacred tree of the temple is a neem tree located in the outer corridor. Other shrines at the outer corridor include a sacred anthill and shrines of goddess Karumari Ganesh, and Nagadevas  (serpent deities) under the sacred tree. Devotees believe that worshiping the goddess fulfills their wish for a child

There are two stories  about the origin of this temple

1.A cultivatot named Ponmeni once mortgaged his land to a person calledMahisuran. He  worked under him and managed to live with wages.Mahisura started treating Ponmeni in a cruel way asking back the money charging  interest after interest.Ponmeni was not able to return Then Mahisura told ponmeni, to go plough an uncultivated land outside the village night and day  on Shivarathri and make it suitable for cultivation.Poongavanam was known as a place where  evil spirits wander.

He went there prayed his clan God Karmari  and started ploughing,Then an old man and old woman came and sat near a tree shade and went on watching him.Old woman became thirsty and was suffering Ponmenitook the old man to search for water.Whem he returned  the old woman was not there,When he turned and saw  the old man was also not there.Ponmeni started  ploughing again. But blood started oozing out from that place.Ponmeni fainted.A voice told him  not to be scared and said the old woman was angaa parameshwari and has turned in to an ant hill. And you ploughed me and showe me to the world.Becayuse of that you will  gert the duty of worshipping me. Sonnthe earth he was ploughing gave way and he saw an ant hill and goddess  lying down on earth ,Since she appeared in Poongavanam, she was called poongavab nathamman and the ant hill in tami is called Puthu and the place was called  Putlur

2,Another story says that lord shiva and goddess were going through that place and she felt thirsty,Shiva walked and crossed a dry river. It stared raining  and river was in flood .After  flood receded  Lord Shiva came back, Goddess had lied down there  and turned in to an ant hill,Shiva got angry and danced  and he is called  Thandava rayan

Worship method

Ladies are not getting pregnant    come to the temple with five Lime fruits and few bangles.

One lime is crushed by the feet  by old ladies to remove evil eye.Three lime fruits are pierced on TRishoola(trident) near  the flag post .The lady enters the temple and the remaining fruit is kept under feet of angala Parameshwari and wait and show   theMunthanai(tip of the sarithen the priest rolls out the  fruit and if she is able to catch , her prayer  would be answered.

It is also believed that Goddess  protects  health of pregnant ladies  and special pooja  is done for that
